After a devastating cooking accident in his home in Mexico, Lucas suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body. His injuries were critical, and doctors weren’t sure he would survive the emergency flight to the United States for specialized care.
Lucas was flown directly to Shriners Children’s Ohio in Dayton, where he began an intense and lengthy recovery. With his condition so fragile, his family suddenly found themselves far from home, navigating an unfamiliar country, and facing months of uncertainty. That was when they found Ronald McDonald House Charities Dayton.
“I was afraid something might happen to him on the plane,” his mother recalled. “But from the moment we arrived, it felt like angels surrounded us; his doctors, nurses, social workers, and everyone at the Ronald McDonald House.”
As complications mounted, including severe infections, a tracheostomy, and the partial removal of his intestines, the family faced the very real fear that Lucas might not survive.
“It was so tough for us. Doctors didn’t know if Lucas was going to make it,” his mom shared. “But now you see him, playing, smiling, being a regular toddler again. God helped us a lot, and so did the people around us.”
The family stayed at RMHC Dayton for 373 nights while Lucas received lifesaving treatment. Amid surgeries and setbacks, the House became their refuge.
“We never expected to be here for so long, and we never expected to be so supported. At the House, we had everything: meals, a place to shower, a bed to sleep in, even shampoo and shoes. It was more than we could have imagined. It helped us feel human again.”
For Lucas’ parents, even small breaks from the hospital were lifesaving. “You don’t realize how important a warm shower or a quiet room is until you’ve spent months in a hospital. Ronald McDonald House gave us that peace, that breath.”
One of their favorite memories was celebrating Christmas at the House. “Lucas had just been discharged. We were emotional, but seeing Santa come with gifts for all the kids brought so much joy. For a moment, it felt like we were back home with all of our children.”
Lucas and his parents were among the first families to move into the newly built Ronald McDonald House. “It was a fresh start when we needed it most.”
Throughout it all, faith played a central role in their story. “There were moments when we had only 1% of hope left. But we never felt alone. Our faith and the support from RMHC Dayton kept us going. Our family’s faith became stronger than ever.”
After 18 months in Ohio, Lucas was finally discharged and cleared to return home to Mexico. “Our hearts were split in two. Our daughters were back home, and we missed birthdays, graduations, and so many important moments. But now we are going back. We will make up for lost time.”
Their message to others is simple. “Never lose faith, no matter how hard it gets. Trust the process. The Ronald McDonald House gave us peace and comfort when we had none. We are so grateful.”
Parents don’t know when their children will need medical help. But they should know they can have a place to stay. With your help, everyone will have a warm, friendly home away from home.
Tune in for a day full of hope, stories, and community support for RMHC Dayton families.
